Gary Kissiah was introduced to Eastern philosophy in college when he discovered the writings of Alan Watts which led to studies in Zen and Zen-inspired poetry. Gary found yoga in 2000 as a way to recover from back trauma and has been studying and practicing yoga since that time.
Gary has a Certificate of Yoga Philosophy from the California Institute of Integral Studies. He has studied yoga at Esalen Institute, Parmarth Niketan Ashram and Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville. Gary also practices Zen at Kannon Do Zen Meditation Center and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center. He has taken inspiration from the workshops and writings of such teachers as Sri Swami Satchidananda, Sally Kempton, Ana Forrest, Gary Kraftsow and Thich Nhat Hanh.
Gary believes that a firm grounding in yoga philosophy is essential to authentically practice yoga and to progress on the spiritual path. Gary brings a broad perspective in teaching philosophy by using imagery, poetry, music and his athletic experience to open this wisdom to our practice and modern lifestyles. As Dharma Mittra once said: "A yoga practice without the Yoga Sutras is like spaghetti without the sauce."
Cristina Urioste - Organic Chef
Cristna’s appreciation for organic, seasonal, and locally grown food began while living on a beautiful farm in the Blue Ridge Mountainsof Virginia, where she learned organic gardening techniques and grew her own fruits and vegetables from 1997- 2000. Participating so fully with the cycles of nature served as a profound epiphany in her understanding of the human relationship with food. It was also during that time that she began studying Ayurveda, an ancient holistic lifeway from India (often considered yoga’s ‘sister science’), at The Wise Earth School of Ayurveda. There, Sri Swamini Mayatitananda carefully taught her about grace, wholeness, and sadhana in the kitchen, and reminded her that food is medicine. Ultimately, in 1999 she became Chef of the Wise Earth School, preparing food for Swamini Mayatitananda Herself, as well as doctors, health practitioners, healers, yoga teachers, and spiritual seekers. Since then, Cristina has been cooking and teaching others how to prepare wholesome delicious meals at wellness retreat centers, yoga centers, summer camps, private homes, fundraising events, movie sets, and more. Her most exciting commitment was as full time private chef to a leading actor in one of 2007’s blockbuster film productions.
Cristina currently lives in Venice, California, where she continues to garden and prepare organic delights with constant joy. You can typically find her at one or more of the outstanding farmer’s markets on the Westside with a canvas bag full of organic goodies for that week’s menu. She caters events and prepares food in private homes. She also teaches Ayurvedic Nutrition in The Wise Earth Tradition both privately and in small groups.

Asana: Danyasa™ Yoga Practice and Teaching Methodology
We practice meditation and pranayama before yoga asana every morning. Sofiah will offer Danyasa Inspired Yoga and an introduction to the full advanced practice of Danyasa™ taking our yoga off the mat. Consistent practice helps us internalize the art of sequencing and the essence of the teachings. We intensify our daily practice of Danyasa Inspired Yoga™ with workshops on postures, the art of teaching a flowing sequence, as well as weaving the essence of Danyasa into your own creative yoga flow.
We begin our day on the beach or in the studio at sunrise with Pranayama (breathing techniques) and Meditation to still and purify the mind. Pranayama consists of rounds of Kapalabati, 'shining skull breath' and Anuloma Viloma, alternate nostril breathing. We introduce practitioners to additional yogic breathing exercises to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit during our morning meditation and asana practice.
Every morning after our Pranayama practice, we guide you in either sitting Meditation to cultivate a one-pointed focus of the mind or movement meditation to connect with and move from inner landscape as you connect and respond to the natural enviroment and allow your essence to shine.
Expressive Healing Arts
Sofiah will offer tools from her eclectic background and perspective in Yoga as a powerful healing art and the importance of self empowerment through expression, as she guides you through exercises in creative writing, self portrait drawings and expressive movement. She believes connecting to the outer landscape and being outside on the beach and in the waterfalls is just a much a part of being in the studio. So get ready to explore the relationship between your inner and outer landscape here in the jungle!

Edgar will also be joining us to share his knowledge of the anatomy of asana and hands-on adjustments.
